Fayetteville, Arkansas

We spent two days with our friends Jerry & Paula in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  We first met Jerry in 1969 at Aviano, Italy.  He worked with Ray in the GCA Unit at Aviano AFB.  Jerry spent holidays with us, babysat with our boys and was just a great friend.  It was great seeing him and Paula again. They have a lovely home on 3 acres outside Fayetteville.  On Sunday they took us on a ride in the Ozark Mountains to the town of Eureka Springs with a stop at the War Eagle Mill.  We had to drive across the War Eagle Bridge, a one lane bridge that crosses the War Eagle Creek.  The bridge was built in 1907 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The War Eagle Mill is a working gristmill and has been located on the site since 1832. Our next stop was Eureka Springs. What a neat town with winding mountainside streets and lots of shops, boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, hotels, Victorian homes and cottages. The whole downtown area is on the National Register of Historic Places.  We stopped to eat at the Balcony Restaurant at the Basin Park Hotel.  The food was very good and the views of the city from the balcony was great.  After eating we did some walking around town and window shopping before heading back to Paula and Jerry's.  It was a great day.
We left Fayetteville on Monday morning and drove to Little Rock, Arkansas.  We have been staying at the Little Rock Air Force Base FamCamp.  We had hoped to see friends from England, but we have been unable to make contact with them.  We didn't do any sight seeing.  We thought about going to President Clinton's Library, but the Occupy Little Rock protestors were camped out in the park in front of the library, so decided not to go into downtown.  I did my laundry, watched the C-130's fly around and saw some of the damage the base received from a tornado in April.  It damaged about 100 homes in base housing, the base exchange, commissary, buildings on the flight line and several airplanes.  They have completed some repairs, but still working on some.  Tomorrow we will be going to Nashville.
